Semester 1

Mentor name: Kaye Lirio

Course: multimedia design

Mentee name(s): lauren swioklo

Date submitted: 09 / 06 / 2009

Message: she always tries to help us out with everything, whether that be in the beginning, she helped get us all sorted with blackboard and registering till now-where she offers to help search for resources for assignments- taking the time out of her busy 3rd yr schedule. often go in to see her, and shes always weighed under with massive amount of work, yet she still is eager to give us a hand. have gone to see her many times this semester- and she has made adjusting to uni very easy. She has been very good with contact- always gets back to you asap, and will point you in another direction on the very odd occasions where she cant help us. Comparing her to the other mentors in this course- i think she has been by far the best. other students complain that they hardly ever see their mentor (we have a weekly meeting) and that most of the information or help they needed through the semester- they had to figure it out on their own- which wouldve taken much more time and effort! usually she gives us handouts each week- all typed up by her, with help for the different stages in the semester. eg. how to reference assignments properly, how to research in the resource centre properly, a list of some really effective books that she found useful in her first year, to kinds of careers we can get out of doing this course and how to go about them after uni. Our group has often relied on her as giving her opinions about the course, the work and the lecturers (all good !). It has helped me for when choosing electives and options for sem 2- because she tells us what you actually do in the units, the assignments you have to do, the work you get involved in and the new lecturers. There is not really any other source of this information on campus- other than her word of mouth and we didnt know what the elective units were even about- just told to pick one. so overall, i think she has done a really good job in providing help to us, and that she deserves the recognition for a job well done. we were very lucky to have her.

Mentee name(s): Valery Weyn

Date submitted: 23 / 03 / 2009

Message: Vaelei has been invaluable in my transition into university.
She has been extremely helpful and given lots of advice and many useful tips along the way.
Not only has she been friendly, welcoming and willing to help, she has also been keeping me informed of what's happening in and around the university.
I know she has a very busy schedule, but this has never stopped her from finding the time to see me, even if it was just a quick hello. From day one, she already made me feel as though I was part of the university.
She has, without a doubt, made the whole 'starting university' experience seem a lot less terrifying than what I actually thought it would be.
She definitely deserves to be nominated.
